Who doesn’t remember feeling amped when the Mortal Kombat music started playing during the 90s Mortal Kombat movie? Scorpion vs. Johnny Cage, Liu Kang vs. Reptile: What a great movie!

Well, get ready to relive the magic in a new film. Thanks to his work on the Mortal Kombat web series, Kevin Tancharoen is now directing a Mortal Kombat movie reboot for Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema.

According to The L.A. Times, the film is set to be released sometime in 2013, plenty of time for cosplayers to dust off (or create) their Sub Zero costumes. Remember, however, that this isn’t just a remake. Tancharoen’s take on the Mortal Kombat universe is decidedly grittier than what the older film versions offered. In fact, Tancharoen has already stated that “his new movie, which is expected to be produced for well under $100 million, will offer a more realistic take on the Mortal Kombat characters, who are best known for over-the-top killing moves called “fatalities.”
